Hello Tummler fans,
The Casco Bay Tummlers are very excited to be doing two concerts, July 9th and 10th, to benefit The Seeds of Peace Camp in Otisfield, Maine. As an added bonus, the concerts will be a double bill with the wonderful Okbari Middle Eastern Ensemble. The concerts will be great and it's an excellent cause. Please write the date down and help us to spread the word.
Thanks from all of the Tummlers
(If you're not familiar with the Seeds Of Peace Camp, they bring teens from conflict regions together - and in particular Israeli and Palestinian teens - to get to know one another in a peaceful setting. You can read more in the press release below.)

On Thursday and Friday, July 9th and 10th, two of Portland's premier ethnic bands, the Casco Bay Tummlers and the Okbari Middle Eastern Ensemble, will be performing together to benefit the Seeds of Peace Camp located in Otisfield, Maine. The Thursday concert will be at One Longfellow Square in Portland. Friday's performance will take place at Deertrees Theater in Harrison, ME.
Two summers ago the Casco Bay Tummlers did a guest performance at the Seeds of Peace Camp. Band member Carl Dimow says, "It was incredibly inspiring to see hundreds of Jewish and Palestinian teens and teachers getting to know one another; working talking and playing together in a peaceful setting. The turmoil in the Middle East often seems beyond repair, but this camp is true to it's name, creating seeds of hope for the future. And amazingly, it's happening right here in our backyard in Maine."
The concerts will feature sets by each band and will end with a joint performance of songs that are common to both traditions.
Seeds of Peace's mission is to help young people from regions of conflict develop the leadership skills necessary to advance reconciliation and coexistence. The three week conflict resolution program at the camp is designed to open young minds to the possibility of a new reality. Every aspect of the program fosters trust, challenges assumptions and narrows the psychological distance between the participants. The program's intensity is deliberate. Each "Seed" shares a bunk with the very people they have been conditioned to hate. Athletic, artistic and cultural activities scheduled throughout the days deepen the bonds between "Seeds". Daily dialogue sessions form the center of the program. There are now nearly 4,000 young Seeds of Peace leaders making a positive difference in the Middle East, South Asia, and the United States.
The Okbari Middle Eastern Ensemble performs Ottoman classical and Turkish contemporary art music along with works from the Armenian and Anatolian folk traditions. Okbari also presents Arabic folk and classical music as well traditional songs from Greece and the Balkans. Okbari has released five albums since they formed in 1995, and play widely throughout the Northeast.
The Casco Bay Tummlers have been performing klezmer music since 1988. Their Eastern European Jewish folk music has been featured at festivals throughout Europe and they have released three CD's. The Tummler's repertoire is versatile and eclectic, ranging from original music to traditional dances, Yiddish theater songs and Balkan music. "Fun and frolic, but also pathos and yearning abound. This is emotionally charged music, played with abandon by musicians who are clearly comfortable with each other." Greater Boston Flute Gazette
